At the top of my ranking of the best films of 2010 I had no difficulty in placing the extraordinary film by Abbas Kiarostami. A sublime film, absolutely perfect, and all points of view, which has attracted a large audience because you too, dear readers, you've voted best film of the year. Many have tried to identify the truth in this story, or their own truth. If these have found some satisfaction in a personal attempt to resolve the riddle posed by the film, fine. But the only truth that matters to me is that the immense power of cinema is the very principle of the work. I personally do not care whether the Couple filmed is a true fact that initially seemed to meet, or if it is a fake who pretends to have loved. I do not know and I do not really ask the question. San Francisco, 1963. The young Birdlace Eddie (River Phoenix) is preparing for his last night before leaving for Vietnam.
